If you’re thinking of having a dock installed, the classic, weathered wood look is likely the first idea to come to mind. However, composite and aluminum docks offer other options (and benefits) that are worth considering.
Wood Docks
Wood docks have a beautiful natural appearance that makes them a popular choice. And since wood is an insulator, your dock won’t heat up as much in direct sun during the sweltering days of summer. But wood docks also require more attention and regular maintenance to protect them from the constant exposure to water and dampness.
Composite Docks
Composite docks are made from a mixture of wood and plastic fibers. Docks made of composite materials are resistant to algae growth and come in a variety of colors, allowing for more artistic expression. But composite docks can be warmer to the touch than natural wood, and they are heavier than lightweight aluminum, making installation more difficult.
Aluminum Docks
Unlike wood docks, aluminum docks are more durable when exposed to water, so they don’t require as much maintenance attention. Aluminum docks won’t warp or rust when exposed to the elements, so you can continue to enjoy a fresh, clean look with very little upkeep.
However, like composite docks, aluminum docks can retain more heat than wood docks, so you may want to bring beach towels or deck furniture with you during hot summer days rather than sitting directly on the dock itself.
